Video Breakdown: Engineering the Hook
When editing this video about the Anchoring Effect, I treated the first three seconds as a practical experiment in human attention. I didn’t just want the motion graphics to look clean; I wanted to build a hook based on how viewers actually consume information.
opened the script with, “This is how companies exploit you.” This was a deliberate test of negativity bias. People are naturally wired to pay more attention to negative information or potential threats than positive news. By framing the topic around loss aversion—the fear of being tricked out of money—it creates a gap in knowledge that forces the viewer to watch the rest of the video to protect themselves.
I paired that psychological hook with stark, high-contrast red text. Red naturally signals urgency and stops the scroll in a crowded feed. Every editing decision here, from the color grading in Premiere Pro to the pacing of the keyframes in After Effects, was built around testing theories of curiosity and driving actual retention.
